Metro In Dino Day One Box Office Collection: Anurag Basu’s Anthology Opens to a Decent Start

While the film hasn't drawn crowds in droves, its emotional storytelling and ensemble cast have sparked early interest at the box office.

Anurag Basu’s latest directorial, Metro In Dino, arrived in theatres on July 4 with a fair bit of buzz—thanks to its star-studded cast and spiritual link to the 2007 film Life in a… Metro. But when it comes to the box office, the opening day numbers suggest a modest start rather than a blockbuster beginning. Still, with good reviews and a niche appeal, this emotional anthology might just find its audience over the weekend.

Box Office Update: A Measured Opening

Early estimates show that Metro In Dino collected approximately ₹3–3.2 crore on day one. That’s not a massive number by any stretch, but for a niche, dialogue-heavy film with no heavy commercial hooks, it’s not a disappointment either.

Its fate will likely depend on weekend word of mouth. If audiences continue resonating with its emotional beats, the film could build momentum. But make no mistake—this is more slow burn than overnight success.

A Sequel in Spirit, Not Just Name

Metro In Dino may be branded a sequel, but it doesn’t follow in the footsteps of Life in a… Metro in the traditional sense. It’s a thematic continuation, dealing once again with the complexities of love in urban life—only this time, the narratives span generations and emotional wavelengths.

Anurag Basu’s signature touch is all over the film: layered characters, intersecting storylines, and an unapologetic focus on the messiness of relationships. Rather than aiming for massy moments, he leans into realism and restraint.

A Cast That Feels the Emotion

The ensemble cast is both diverse and well-utilised. Aditya Roy Kapur and Sara Ali Khan bring charm and relatability, while Ali Fazal and Fatima Sana Shaikh strike a deeper emotional chord. The show-stealers, however, are the veterans—Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta—who lend gravitas to stories that deal with love beyond youth.

Each actor pulls their weight, and that’s crucial in an anthology format where even a short segment needs to land with impact.
