Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi are reuniting after nearly three decades with Batwara 1947, one of the most talked-about Hindi releases of the year. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the makers recently hosted a special screening in Mumbai, and the first reaction from a prominent filmmaker has now surfaced online.
Producer Ramesh Taurani attended the screening and shared his review on social media, describing the film as an emotionally powerful period drama that deserves to be watched on the very first day of release.
Ramesh Taurani praises Batwara 1947 after special screening
Taking to Instagram, Ramesh Taurani called Batwara 1947 a deeply moving film that celebrates humanity even in the darkest chapters of history. He wrote that the story is sensitive, emotionally resonant, and carries a powerful message about compassion and resilience. According to him, the film deserves a “First Day, First Show” watch because of the way it portrays courage, kindness, and the strength of the human spirit during the Partition era.
Taurani also praised Sunny Deol’s performance, calling it impactful and emotionally compelling. He expressed his happiness at seeing Preity Zinta back on the big screen in a significant role and appreciated the performances of Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol for bringing depth and authenticity to the narrative. He reserved special praise for Abhimanyu Singh, describing his portrayal of the antagonist as both compelling and unsettling.
Rajkumar Santoshi praised for emotional storytelling
In his review, Ramesh Taurani also applauded director Rajkumar Santoshi for once again delivering a story rooted in humanity and emotion. He said the filmmaker’s ability to connect with audiences through heartfelt storytelling remains one of his greatest strengths.
The producer further congratulated Aparna Purohit and Aamir Khan Productions for backing the project and concluded that Batwara 1947 is a beautifully crafted film with a powerful message that should not be missed.
Advance booking shows strong initial response
Even before release, Batwara 1947 has begun generating encouraging box office momentum. According to early trade reports, the film has sold over 24,000 tickets in advance across India, with gross advance bookings approaching ₹67 lakh. The period drama is expected to release on more than 5,500 screens nationwide, giving it a wide theatrical reach.
Trade analysts believe the numbers could grow significantly closer to release, especially considering Sunny Deol’s recent box office resurgence. Gadar 2 had also witnessed modest early expectations before eventually becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of his career.

Box office clash with Awarapan 2
Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release on 14 August, where it will face competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. The clash is expected to be one of the most closely watched box office battles of the Independence Day weekend.
