Success often changes lifestyles, but for Jaaved Jaaferi, the values instilled by his father ensured that fame never altered the family’s sense of humility. During a recent episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5, the actor, dancer, and judge opened up about his childhood, reflecting on modest beginnings, family values, and the lessons he learned from his father despite growing up around stardom.
The emotional conversation took place as the show celebrated the theme of “India Wala Dance.” Jaaved’s memories resonated deeply with fellow judge Remo D’Souza and the audience, as both spoke about the importance of upbringing and the often-overlooked role fathers play in shaping their children’s lives.
Jaaved Jaaferi recalls growing up in a modest household
Speaking about his childhood, Jaaved revealed that although his father had already achieved a certain level of success when he was born, the family continued to live a simple life.
Recalling those years, he said, “Jab hum paida hue the, mere father reasonable star level pe the. We were living in a one-bedroom hall, very humble building jahan woh do maale ki building thi. Dopahar mein, ‘Aunty kya banaya hain?’ ‘Rajma banaya hain.’ Uss mahool mein pale-badhe.”
Jaaved was describing a close-knit community atmosphere where neighbours interacted freely, and families shared everyday experiences. He explained that he and his brother Naved grew up in a small home where personal space was a luxury.
He continued, “Aaj kal ke bachche bolte hain, ‘I need my space.’ Tab kuch space nahi tha yaar. Main aur mera chhota bhai Naved bahar hall mein sote the. Dadi bhi saath mein soti thi.”
Through these memories, Jaaved highlighted how a lack of material comforts never affected the warmth and togetherness of family life.
The lesson his father taught through his own journey
Jaaved went on to explain that his father’s difficult upbringing played a major role in shaping the family’s outlook on life. Despite achieving success, he never allowed wealth to overshadow the importance of staying grounded.
Sharing more about those years, Jaaved said, “Bahut modest living mein rahe because mere father ekdum lower class se aaye the. Unhone dekhi poverty. Yeh ameeri ka yash, sab kuch diya humein, but phir bhi ek balance rakha.”
In essence, Jaaved was explaining that his father had experienced poverty firsthand and therefore made a conscious effort to maintain balance in the family’s life even after achieving financial success. The actor revealed that this approach continued even after he became a star himself.
He added, “Main films mein aaya, phir main reasonable star ban gaya tha. I think I was a 5-year star before I got married. Naved and I in the same room tab bhi.”
The statement underscored how the family prioritised values and simplicity over the display of wealth.
Jaaved reflects on understanding a father’s sacrifices
The conversation later turned emotional as Jaaved spoke about the unique role fathers play within a family. He admitted that while he was always more open with his mother, it took him years to fully appreciate his father’s contributions.
“Father se baat karne mein thoda dar lagta tha, lekin maa se hum open, free the. Father ki second zindagi humne jiya. Woh saari stories batate the,” he shared.
Explaining his thoughts further, Jaaved reflected on how fathers often work quietly in the background without receiving the same recognition as mothers.
“Aaj aisa hota hai ki father jo karte hain na, woh dikhta nahi hain. Maa hamesha saamne rehti hain, lekin kahin na kahin father background mein rehte hain. I think woh value hum samajhte nahi hain. Baad mein hum khud baap ban jaate hain na, tab samajh mein aati hain.”
Through these words, Jaaved expressed that many children only begin to understand their father’s sacrifices once they become parents themselves and experience similar responsibilities.
Remo D’Souza echoes the importance of values over wealth
Jaaved’s reflections struck a chord with fellow judge Remo D’Souza, who shared a similar perspective about his own upbringing.
Speaking about the lessons he received from his father, Remo said, “Hamare dad ke paas kuch nahi tha, phir bhi unhone padhaya, sikhaya. Jo jo important tha life mein, woh saara sikhaya. Agar sab kuch hain, toh apne bachche ko values sikhao, values sikhao.”
Remo’s message reinforced the idea that while financial success can provide opportunities, the values parents pass on to their children remain far more important in the long run.
The heartfelt exchange became one of the most emotional moments of the episode, reminding viewers that humility, gratitude, and strong family values often remain the true measure of success.
